Redact a PDF and actually remove the content
Drawing a black rectangle over text is not redaction. The words are still in the file, and anyone can select, copy or extract them — a mistake that has embarrassed law firms, governments and newspapers repeatedly. PDFlick's Redact tool removes the underlying content, so what is gone is gone.

How to redact a PDF and actually remove the content
On iPhone & iPad
- Open the document and tap Redact PDF.
- Mark the text or regions that must be removed.
- Apply the redaction — the content underneath is removed, not merely covered.
- Save, then reopen the saved file and try to select the redacted area to confirm.
On Mac
- Open the document and choose Redact.
- Mark the regions on the full-size canvas.
- Apply and save with ⌘S, then verify the result in the saved file.
What makes it different
- Redaction removes the underlying content rather than drawing over it.
- Every other tool in PDFlick — highlights, covers, text replacement, watermarks — leaves the original content underneath, and the app says so where it matters.
- A black shape drawn with the annotation tools is not a redaction. Only the Redact tool removes content.

Why is drawing a black box not enough?
A PDF stores text and graphics as separate objects. A black rectangle is a graphic placed on top; the text object underneath is untouched and can still be selected, copied, searched or extracted by anyone with any PDF tool. Redaction has to delete the text object itself.
Can redacted content be recovered?
The content is removed from the saved document, so it cannot be recovered from that file. Your original unredacted document still exists wherever you kept it — manage that copy accordingly.
How do I verify a redaction worked?
Reopen the saved file and try to select or search for the text you removed. If nothing is selectable in that region and a search for the words returns nothing, the content is gone.
Does redaction remove metadata too?
Redaction targets page content. If a document's metadata or file name also carries sensitive information, review those separately before sharing.
